Macrobiotics was the only wholefood/healthy eating message of the 1960s and 70s, inspiring the natural foods and organic movement.
The first natural food stores that appeared in the 70s in the US and Europe stuck to macrobiotic principles, selling grains and pulses and organic vegetables and avoiding processed foods, especially any containing sugar. Macrobiotic medicine mirrors elements of traditional Japanese folk medicine but puts primary emphasis on diet. Zen Macrobiotics, by Georges Ohsawa was the original guide to macrobiotic living. In it he describes positive health. шealth is not just the absence of disease but is defined in positive terms as: No fatigue, good appetite, deep and good sleep, good memory, good humour, clarity of thinking and doing and, most importantly, gratitude. The four-part way to achieve this is set out as: Natural food, no medicine, no surgery, no inactivity.
